How to make a barcode

Three steps, all in your browser.

  1. 1

    Choose a type

Pick UPC, EAN, Code 128 or another type, then type your data.

  2. 2

    Adjust the barcode

Change the options if you need to. The preview updates as you type.

  3. 3

    Download

Save the result and print it. Test a printed sample before a big run.

Free barcode tools that keep your data private

JustYourBarcode is a free set of barcode tools that run in your browser. Make retail barcodes (UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8, ISBN), logistics barcodes (Code 128, GS1-128, ITF-14), older symbologies such as Code 39, Code 93, Interleaved 2 of 5, Codabar and MSI, and 2D codes such as Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec. Type your data, see the barcode straight away and download it, with no account and no watermark.

Everything happens on your device. The numbers you type, the pictures you open, the CSV files you turn into barcodes and the frames from your camera when you scan are processed in the browser and are never sent to our server. That makes the tools safe for unreleased products, stock lists and anything else you'd rather not share.

Beyond plain barcodes there are design barcodes with art rising from the bars, a camera scanner and a picture reader, bulk generation and label sheets, and calculators for check digits, UPC to EAN and ISBN conversion. A barcode only encodes a number: for products sold in shops, the number itself comes from GS1.

Popular uses

  • Barcodes for products you sell, using your GS1-licensed UPC or EAN
  • Back-cover barcodes for self-published books
  • Code 128 labels for stock, bins, assets and documents
  • Carton and pallet barcodes for shipping (ITF-14, GS1-128)
  • Checking a number's check digit before you print thousands of labels

Tips for the best result

  • Print barcodes with dark bars on a white or light background; red, yellow and orange bars don't scan with red-light scanners.
  • Keep the blank margins (quiet zones) either side of the bars clear of text and edges.
  • Test a printed sample with a real scanner or the scanner on this site before a large print run.

Read how JustYourBarcode works and our privacy details. Numbers, pictures, CSV files and camera frames are processed in your browser and are never sent to our server. A barcode doesn't register a product number: retail UPC and EAN numbers come from GS1.
